Light Scattering Device #2 (Confocal DLS)
Custom-made confocal DLS system. FCS mode is available.
Light Scattering Device #3 (ALV5000E)
Light scattering system manufactured by ALV. Ideal for general-purpose experiments; uses a He-Ne laser and can be used at temperatures ranging from -10 to 90ºC.
2D Laser Speckle Imaging System
A device for observing self-made laser speckles. It visualizes blurred and spatially inhomogeneous states invisible in real-space observation with a long coherence length laser and a high-sensitivity camera.
SAXS/WAXS instrument (Anton Paar SAXSpoint5.0)
An automated X-ray scattering system covering SAXS to WAXS (q = 1E-3- 5.0 Å-1) with temperature control from -10°C to 120°C. Operated in atmospheric mode, it enables measurements around q = 5E-3- 2.0 Å-1. X-ray scattering is now measurable in the lab, complementing light scattering!
Rheometer (Anton Paar MCR501)
Viscoelastic behavior such as viscosity, dynamic viscoelasticity, and stress relaxation can be measured. Jigs such as double cylinders, parallel plates, and cone plates are available.
Tensile tester (Shimazu EZ-L)
Capable of uniaxial stretching at a maximum stretching ratio of about 20x. 50N air-chuck type clamps were often used, but clip type clamps are surprisingly good.
HPLC (Shimazu Prominence)
Equipped with differential refractive index and PDA type UV detector, size exclusion chromatography of aqueous systems and reversed-phase chromatography with high-pressure gradient are possible at temperatures above room temperature. Semi-fractional yield is also possible.
Refractometer (Anton Paar Abbemat 650)
A digital refractometer with 5-digits accuracy, working from 4-125C.
Differential Refractometer (Otsuka Electronics DRM 1021)
The incremental refractive index (dn/dc) of polymer solutions can be measured. Samples with high viscosity should be diluted and measured.
Polarized Light Microscope (Olympus BX51)
Allows visual evaluation of anisotropic samples such as crystals and liquid crystals. It is also useful for measuring samples with unclear interfaces, such as gel samples immersed in water.
Refrigerated Centrifuge (Thermo ST 8FR)
Centrifugation up to 30,000 x g is possible, and the temperature can be controlled from -10 to 40ºC. It is equipped with a variety of rotors.
UV-VIS Spectrometer (JASCO V-630)
Capable of measuring transmittance and absorbance within the wavelength range of 200-1100nm. Photometric range is about -3~3Abs. Equipped with a Peltier temperature controller, allowing temperature control within the range of 0~100°C. Equipped with capillary cell and flow cell for trace sample and DNA melting curve.
Glovebox (Glovebox Japan GBJF080)
Glovebox for anhydrous environment. Hokkaido has low humidity to begin with, so it may be used less frequently.
Mixer (Tinky AR100)
A device for mixing polymer solutions, etc.
Freeze Dryer (Yamato DC800)
A normal grade freeze dryer.
-30º Freezer (Fukushima Galilei)
-30º freezer for polymers.
Ultrapure Water System (Elga Flex3)
A small footprint ultrapure water system.

A wide-spaced fume food.
